Ubud Monkey Forest

The mission of the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana (Monkey Forest Ubud) is preserving the area based on the Tri Hita Karana concept, is one of the philosophy in Hinduism. Tri Hita Karana comes from the word "Tri" which means three, "Hita" which means happiness and "Karana" meaning cause or way. Thus Tri Hita Karana means "Three ways to achieve the well-being of the innate and the soul".

The essence of Tri Hita Karana's teachings, how to keep people in harmony in life in this world. These three relationships include harmonious relationships with fellow human beings, relationships with the natural environment, and relationship with God. In its implementation, in addition to ritual ceremonies performed in temples, can also be seen in special ritual activities related to animals called Tumpek Kandang or Tumpek Uduh, where the vegetation is the main subject.

With the above concept, Mandala Suci Wenara Wana will become an important location for research activities and conservation programs, also an International Travel Adventure that can create harmony and peace to visitors. As well as the lungs of the city, where the preservation of rare plants and yadnya (ceremony), and as a natural laboratory for educational institutions. 

Monkey
The kind of monkeys that live within the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana (Monkey Forest Ubud) area are known as long-tailed monkeys in scientific terms called Macaca fascicularis or Macaque.

There are about 700 apes inhabiting this area. They are divided into 5 groups: in front of the temple, michelin, east, center, and grave. Each group consisting of 100 - 120 monkeys consists of: infant (0 - 1 year), juvenile 1 (1 - 2 years), juvenile 2 (2 - 4 years), sub adult male (4-6 years), adult female (> 4 years), and adult males (> 6 years). Because of the large population, conflicts between groups of apes can not be avoided. Sometimes for a particular purpose, such as bathing in a river in the dry season, a particular group must pass through another group's territory.

This type of monkey is active during the day and rest at night. Female monkeys contain for 6 months and generally give birth to 1 baby. It is very rare to have twins. Baby monkeys with their mothers for about 10 months and afterwards will be weaned to live independently. Marriage can occur throughout the year with high intensity happening around May - August. Moth (female) mothers are very nurturing their babies and even female mothers who do not give birth also take care of the monkeys, together. The average weight of female monkeys 2.5 - 5.7 kg and 3.5 - 8 kg monkeys. The life span of male monkeys is up to 15 years old while female apes are up to 20 years old.

Long-tailed monkeys include omnivorous animals, the main meal is sweet potato, given 3 times daily and daily combined with: banana, papaya leaf, maize, cucumber, coconut, and other local fruits.


Temple
Based on an analysis of Pura Purana - a sacred book made of palm leaves and a historic document of a temple, the temple in the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana was built around the middle of the 14th century. At that time the kingdom in Bali controlled by the Pejeng Dynasty or can also be said around the beginning of the Gelgel Dynasty. There are three temples in the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana area:

~ Pura Dalem Agung, located in the southwest of the region. This temple is a place of worshiping God (Hyang Widhi) in his personification as Lord Shiva or Recycling Hyang.

~ Pura Beji. This temple is a place of worshiping God (Hyang Widhi) in his personification as Dewi Gangga. This temple is a place of purification before the ceremony (piodalan). Pura Beji is also often used to melukat as spiritual cleansing and spiritual birth.

~ Pura Prajapati This temple is located in the northeast of the region. This temple is side by side with the grave. In this temple Hindus worship God (Hyang Widhi) in his personification as Prajapati. Please note, the existing graveyard, used for temporary while waiting for the implementation of mass crashes held every 5 years.

~ In general, monkeys will not come to you if you do not bring bananas or other foods. If you want to interact or feed an ape, do it carefully. If you handed bananas or food to apes and apes to take the food from you, do not ever try to recall the food. Let go.
~ To keep ape's health, please do not feed apes with nuts, biscuits, bread, or other snacks.
~ To preserve the forests and monkeys, we invite you to treat the forests, animals, and the environment here well.
~ This area is the area sanctified by the local community. There are parts of the area that no one can access. For example the sacred area of ​​the temple. This area can only be accessed by those who will pray and by wearing a complete Balinese traditional dress.
