Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu or Temple Uluwatu is a temple located in the village of Pecatu, Kuta District, Badung. The temple, located on the southwestern tip of the island of Bali on top of a ridge of steep and high rocks and jutting into the sea is a Sad Kayangan Temple that is believed by Hindus as a buffer of 9 winds. This temple was originally used as a place to worship a holy priest from the 11th century named Empu Kuturan. He lowered the teachings of Desa Adat with all its rules.

This temple is also used to worship the next holy priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha, who came to Bali at the end of 1550 and ended his holy journey with what is called Moksa or Ngeluhur in this place. This word is the origin of the name of Pura Luhur Uluwatu.

Uluwatu temple is located at an altitude of 97 meters from sea level. In front of the temple there is a small forest called the base of kekeran, serves as a buffer holiness of the temple.

Temple Uluwatu has some temple Pesanakan, the temple is closely related to the main temple such  Pura Bajurit, Pura Pererepan, Pura Kulat, Pura Dalond Selonding and Pangleburan Pura Dalem. Each of these temples has a close relationship with Uluwatu Temple, especially in its piodalan days. Piodalan in Pura Uluwatu, Pura Bajurit, Pura Pererepan and Pura Kulat falls on Tuesday Kliwon Wuku Medangsia every 210 days. The manifestation of God worshiped at Uluwatu Temple is the God of Rudra.

In addition to the architectural charm of the temple as well as the beauty of sunset scenery, tourists can also watch traditional Balinese dance performances, namely Kecak Bali Dance. Kecak Uluwatu Dance is played by 50 - 100 dancers. Kecak Dancer will sit in a circle and wear a black and white sarong.

The Kecak dancers are predominantly men and the story is usually told Ramayana story. Characteristic of Kecak dance is the sound of cak, cak, cak which is spoken by male dancers who mutually reply. When the performance of Kecak Uluwatu dance is done in the afternoon before sunset, exactly staged at 18:10 - 19:00 Bali time.

Uluwatu Temple Opening Hours: 09:00 – 18:00. As a place of worship however, it is open 24 hours daily. Location: Pura Uluwatu is located in Pecatu Village, Kuta sub-district, Badung regency, about 25km south of Kuta and it usually takes around one hour to get to and from there.

How to get there: Take the bypass main road to Nusa Dua and to Jimbaran and then follow the ascending road up to Uluwatu.
